Pros & Cons

While we think EVs are pretty great, there are a couple of downsides that are worth noting. Electric Vehicles can't travel as far as traditional vehicles, and take much longer to "refuel" (although, they can be refuelled at home). They tend to be more expensive, but definitely more luxurious. They produce fewer emissions while driving, but the actual manufacturing of the vehicle produces the same emissions as a standard vehicle, if not more. EVs are not without fault, but are by far the most economical option available on the market.

The beauty of Li-ion

Lithium ion batteries are considered to be the industry standard for modern Electric Vehicles. Each Li-ion battery is made up of many smaller batteries called cells. The purer the chemical composition of the compound in the cells, the longer the life of the battery and the better its performance.

  • Increased energy density - this means it will last longer between charges.
  • Decreased self-discharge - all batteries lose their charge over time, but Li-ion batteries have a much lower rate of self-discharge than typical lead-acid or Ni-Cad batteries.

Li-ion batteries are ideal for electric vehicles because they are excellent at retaining energy and do not self-discharge drastically while not in use. Using these batteries to power vehicles are also better for the environment than using diesel or petrol.

Electric Motors

An electric motor develops torque by alternating the polarity of rotating electromagnets attached to the rotor, the rotating part of the machine, and stationary magnets on the stator which surrounds the rotor. One or both sets of magnets are electromagnets, made of a coil of wire wound around an iron core. Current running through the wire creates the magnetic field, providing the power which runs the motor.

Brushless DC motor (BLDC)

Low maintenance, high speeds with lower torque, small size, 85-90% efficient, no brush spark, quick response, limited to light motor vehicles. Depends on electronic mechanisms to transfer current. Contains a permanent magnet, but no brushes - as the name suggests.

Brushed DC Motor

Older but simpler technology, lower cost, lower speed with higher torque. Depends on mechanical systems to transfer current. Makes use of brushes and permanent magnets which can influence maintenance costs.

AC induction motor

Free from brushes and permanent magnets, induction motors are suprisingly powerful at any speed unlike traditional internal combustion engines which lose power as speed increases.
